A short self-drive ride in Breivikeidet

A bus takes you 50 minutes east to a husky camp in Breivikeidet, where you and a partner drive a sled for about 15 minutes each, with a photo stop at the halfway point. It's the cheapest way to drive a team yourself, and the only self-drive trip that takes children from age 4.

Short Self-Drive Sled Ride in Breivikeidet

About this experience

Destination Tromsø runs this from its camp in Breivikeidet, a wide valley close to the sea on the mainland east of Tromsø. The 50-minute bus ride comes with a guide's commentary on the city and Norwegian life. At the camp you get a thermal suit, boots, a hat and mittens, a safety talk and a lesson in steering. Then you're off.

The listing is honest about the ride: a total of 30 minutes at most, at a slow, comfortable pace. You drive for 10 to 15 minutes, stop for photos, swap places and ride back for another 10 to 15. That sounds short, and some guests say so, but standing on the runners tires your thighs faster than you'd think. After the ride come the dogs (about 120 of them, a guest counted), then coffee, tea and cake in the panorama restaurant.

Pick it for small children, nervous first-timers, or a tight budget. If you want a real run, spend the extra $122 on the Kvaløya self-drive trip, where the listing gives 70 to 80 minutes on the trail. Early or late in the season, with too little snow, Destination Tromsø may run the trip on wheeled carts.

  • The lowest price for driving a sled yourself: $229
  • Children from age 4, the youngest of any self-drive trip
  • A photo stop on the trail, with your guide taking the pictures
  • Time in the dog yard with about 120 huskies
  • Hot drinks and cake in a panorama restaurant

What guests say

★★★★★

The dogs are well looked after - they decide when they retire too! We spent time with the dogs before and after the ride. The sled was easy to operate. The dogs were keen to go and didn't want to stop.

One person was “musher” and the other was “princess” (they just sat and enjoyed the view), and we swapped halfway. Then there was a chance to meet all 120 of the huskies, and finally a talk about Sami culture with drinks and cake.

At first, I thought that 10-15 minutes of riding myself and 10-15 minutes of riding along would be incredibly short, but it wasn't. It was so much fun, but it's tiring to stand on the sled for a long time, because it really puts a strain on your thighs.

This was better than I expected, probably the highlight of our trip! We had a clear day, the dogsledding was really fun and we loved getting time to meet all the dogs after.

Tips before you book

  • Be at the Prostneset terminal 15 minutes early. The bus leaves on time.
  • You don't need thick trousers: the suit goes over thermals. A guest said thermals were enough.
  • Hand your phone to the guide at the photo stop and let them shoot. Your gloves stay on.
  • Eat before you go. There's cake, not a meal, and the trip takes 4.5 hours.
  • Booking in November or April? Ask whether your date runs on snow or on wheels.
