Booking choice: The evening sledding trip, from $588 per person. Check dates Tour details
Most sledding runs by day. Guides want light on the trail, and first-time drivers are safer when they can see the dogs. Only a few trips run after dark, and they cost more.
The northern lights season in Tromsø runs from late August to early April (Visit Tromsø). Sledding on snow runs roughly November to April. That overlap is your window.
The quick answer
Only a handful of trips sled after dark; on this site that is the evening sledding trip with dinner, $588, ages 16 and up. The cheaper northern lights husky visit ($187) has no sled ride. Clear sky decides your odds more than anything, and a camp can't move to find it. The plan that works: sled by day, and chase the aurora on a separate night.

Can you see the northern lights while dog sledding in Tromsø?
Yes, on an evening trip with a dark, clear sky and some solar activity. It is never guaranteed, and most sled trips run in daylight.
Three things have to line up: darkness, a gap in the clouds and an aurora overhead. Tromsø sits under the auroral oval, so the third is common. The first two are where nights fail. The Sun has been in the busy part of its cycle since NASA and NOAA declared the solar maximum period in October 2024, and the 2026-27 northern lights outlook covers what that means this winter.
Anyone who promises you the lights on a sledding trip is selling, not forecasting.
Which dog sledding trips run in the evening?
The evening sledding trip with Arctic Resorts, about 10 hours from 13:45 with dinner in a lavvo. Most other trips leave in the morning or around midday.
The evening trip is self-drive, with a husky driving licence as a souvenir and professional northern lights portraits shared within 48 hours, if the sky cooperates. It is for ages 16 and up, at least 130 cm tall, in groups of up to 10. It has 4 reviews on Viator, averaging 4.8. The listing also carries lines about snowmobile insurance and helmets; ask the operator what applies before you go.
Daytime trips start early: buses for Villmarkssenter's guided ride leave between 7:30 and 10:30. They are timed for the light, not the aurora.

Self-drive in the dark, dinner by the fire in a lavvo, and pro aurora portraits if the sky plays along.
Explore the evening sledding trip Tour detailsCan you see the lights on a daytime trip in December?
Rarely. In the polar night it gets dark by mid-afternoon, but daytime trips aren't timed for the aurora, and the low light makes for flat photos of the dogs.
From about 27 November to 15 January the sun stays below the horizon and you get a few hours of blue and pink twilight around noon. A midday trip runs in that twilight. It is beautiful, but it isn't a dark sky. See the polar night post for this winter's dates.
Full Suitcase recommends a morning slot to see the scenery and, if you go in the dark, leaving the driving to a local musher. We agree. Driving a team at night, on your first day, isn't easy.

What is the northern lights husky visit?
An evening at Tromsø Villmarkssenter with 200 huskies, a bacalao dinner and a campfire under the open sky. There is no sled ride.
The husky visit costs $187, lasts about 4 hours and takes all ages. You meet the dogs and puppies, eat stockfish bacalao in a lavvo, toast marshmallows and wait on reindeer skins for the sky. The Viator copy of the same trip lists dog sledding and a northern lights chase as excluded. On GetYourGuide both appear in the inclusions list, but the description has no ride.
Guests write about both outcomes. David, in March 2026: "we had loads of time to pet them and interact, we had a delicious dinner and a big bonus for me was seeing the Aurora Borealis". Another got "a break in the clouds [...] after 4 nights of terrible weather".

Huskies and a dark sky for less: the husky visit has dinner by the fire and welcomes all ages.

Good by world standards, but clouds decide, and a fixed camp gets one patch of sky.
Coastal Tromsø is often cloudy in winter. A chase guide can drive two hours to find a hole in the clouds; a kennel can't move. Here is how your evening options compare:
| Option | Sled ride | After dark | Moves to clear sky | From | Ages |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Evening sledding | Yes, self-drive | Yes | No | $588 | 16+ |
| Husky visit | No | Yes | No | $187 | All |
| Northern lights chase | No | Yes | Yes, sometimes to Finland | $225 | All |
| Kvaløya self-drive | Yes, self-drive | No | No | $351 | 7+ |
Use the free cancellation. Every trip here cancels up to 24 hours before, so book the evening early in your stay, watch the cloud forecast on yr.no, and move it if a solid grey night is coming.
Is a northern lights chase better than an evening at a husky camp?
For the lights, yes. A chase guide follows the forecast and drives to clear sky, sometimes into Finland; a camp waits under whatever sky it has.
The small-group chase runs about 8 hours from the Scandic Ishavshotel, with dinner by a fire, thermal suits and souvenir photos by email. It has 2,436 reviews averaging 4.8. Bring your passport in case the guide heads for Finland, and your own winter boots: the listing lends suits but not boots.
For the dogs, the camp wins. That is why we split them.

A separate night for the sky: the small-group chase drives to clear weather and takes your photo.

Sled in the morning on one day, chase the aurora on another night, and keep a spare evening in case of cloud.
- Day: the Kvaløya self-drive, or else the short Breivikeidet ride, in the best light of the day.
- Night: a northern lights chase on the clearest forecast of your stay.
- Spare: one free evening to rebook the chase if the first try clouds over.
The self-drive plus the chase costs $576, a little less than the $588 evening trip, and gives you more sled time in daylight and a guide who can move. Don't stack both on the same day: a 4-hour sled trip and an 8-hour chase make for a long, cold 12 hours.

Day one: drive your own team on Kvaløya in daylight. Keep the night free for the sky.
Explore the Kvaløya self-drive trip Tour detailsHow do you photograph the aurora with huskies?
Leave it to the guides where you can: the evening trip includes pro portraits and the chase emails photos. With a phone, use night mode and brace it on something.
Phones manage the aurora well in night mode if you hold still for a few seconds. Keep the phone in an inside pocket between shots, because cold drains the battery fast. Never film while driving a sled: both hands stay on the handlebar. Arctic Adventure Tours has little room on the sled for tripods and lets you leave them in the equipment room.

No. It is an evening with the dogs, a dinner and a campfire. There is no sled ride, which is why it costs $187.
What is the best month for dog sledding and the northern lights?
January to March: the snow is most reliable, the nights are long and dark, and from late January there is daylight again for the sledding.
What happens if there are no northern lights?
Nothing changes on the trip. No operator promises the lights, so pick a trip that is worth it with a cloudy sky too.
Can children do evening dog sledding?
