Booking choice: The Kvaløya self-drive trip, from $351 per person. Check dates Tour details
Most trips sold in Tromsø are self-drive: two guests share a sled, one drives and one sits, and they swap. A smaller group of trips is guided, where an experienced musher drives and you ride. Nobody sets off alone into the wild on either.
The choice comes down to your body more than your nerve. Balance, thighs, back and age decide it. Here is how each format works and where the limits are.
The quick answer
Self-drive means two people share a sled and swap halfway; you follow a guide in a line of sleds and steer, brake and push uphill. Guided means a musher drives and you sit, with no age or fitness limit. Pick self-drive if you are between about 7 and 70 and steady on your feet. Pick guided for small kids, bad backs or anyone who can't stand for 15 to 40 minutes.

What is the difference between self-drive and guided dog sledding?
On a self-drive trip you and a partner drive your own sled behind a guide. On a guided ride a musher drives and you sit.
The two formats side by side:
| Self-drive | Guided | |
|---|---|---|
| Who drives | You and your partner, taking turns | A professional musher |
| People per sled | Two guests | Two or three guests plus the musher |
| Minimum age | 4 to 7 on most trips; 16 to drive at Villmarkssenter and Camp Tamok | None |
| Fitness | Stand and balance, brake, push on climbs | None |
| Weight | 170 kg per sled for two (Arctic Adventure Tours); 118 to 120 kg per person elsewhere | 180 kg per sled recommended |
| Trips | Kvaløya self-drive, Tamokdalen day, short Breivikeidet ride | Guided sled ride with lunch |
Want to drive? The Kvaløya self-drive gives you 70 to 80 minutes on the trail, swapped with your partner.
Check dates for the Kvaløya self-drive tripHow does sharing a sled work on a self-drive trip?
One person stands on the runners and drives, the other sits in the sled, and you swap halfway or at set stops.
Arctic Adventure Tours gives each pair several chances to swap; one guest counted "2-3 times". At Tromsø Villmarkssenter it is one swap: "if you both wanted to do the steering then you switched halfway (2x 25 mins)". On the short Breivikeidet ride the guide stops halfway for photos, then you change places.
You don't pick the route. The guide's sled leads and the teams follow in a line, which is why first-timers manage it. Share with someone you know if you can: on some trips the weight limit counts both of you together.

How hard is it to drive a dog sled?
Easy on the flat and physical on climbs. Most people get the hang of it in minutes, but you brake, lean into bends, and push or run behind the sled uphill.
- Balance: Villmarkssenter defines the fitness it needs as being able to stand on one leg to keep your balance on the sled.
- Brake: the dogs want to run more than you want to go fast. You brake on downhills and when the line slows.
- Push: in fresh snow or uphill, you step off a runner and push. At Camp Tamok advanced the trail is narrow with sharp bends, and the listing warns you will have to help the dogs.
- Thighs: standing for 15 minutes is tiring. Guests say so, every season.
- Falls: they happen and the snow is soft. A Tromsø Aurora Husky guest wrote that the guide "kept our journey fun, even when we flipped the sled (soft landing in the snow!)". Hold on to the handlebar: the team won't stop for you.
The Tamokdalen trail is the opposite of Camp Tamok's: the operator calls the terrain flat and open.

Fit and want more? Camp Tamok's trail is narrower and steeper, and guests report about 1.5 hours on the sled. Ages 16 and up.

Children under 7, travellers over 70, and anyone with back, knee or heart trouble. A guided ride has no age or fitness limit.
The guided ride at Tromsø Villmarkssenter is about 45 minutes in a sled shared with one or two other guests, with views towards Balsfjord and the Malangen peninsula. Then the dog yard, puppies and a bowl of bidos by the fire. One guest put the appeal simply: "At no point do you have to steer or get off." Another: "We did a morning sledding, and the low sun made the landscape look so beautiful [...] These dogs LOVE to run!"
Self-drive listings rule out pregnant travellers and people with back problems; ask the kennel about the guided ride instead of guessing.

A musher drives, you ride: about 45 minutes on Kvaløya, any age, lunch by the fire.

Self-drive usually starts at 7 (16 at Tromsø Villmarkssenter and Camp Tamok), with weight caps of 118 to 120 kg per person or 170 kg per sled. Guided rides have no minimum age.
Straight from the listings:
| Trip | Format | Min. age | Weight | Fitness |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Short Breivikeidet ride | Self-drive | 4 (4 to 11 with an adult) | Ask at booking | Easy: walk 200 m, stand 15 min |
| Kvaløya self-drive | Self-drive | 7 | 170 kg per sled for two | Basic |
| Tamokdalen day | Self-drive | 7 | 120 kg per person | Medium |
| Self-drive with lunch | Self-drive | 16 (max. 70 recommended) | 118 kg per person | Stand on one leg |
| Camp Tamok advanced | Self-drive | 16 | 120 kg per person | Strong and fit |
| Evening sledding | Self-drive | 16, min. 130 cm tall | 120 kg recommended | Moderate |
| Guided sled ride | Guided | None | 180 kg per sled | None |
The upper age limit is a recommendation at one kennel, not a rule everywhere. A Viator reviewer on the Arctic Adventure Tours trip wrote: "My father in law is 77 and managed this no problem."
Can solo travellers do self-drive dog sledding?
Yes. You are paired with another guest and share a sled, swapping halfway like everyone else.
The author of Full Suitcase shared her sled with a doctor from Japan and called it a fun way to meet people. Expect the same. Give your real weight when you book, since some kennels count the pair's combined weight, and tell the guide if you would rather start as the passenger.
On a guided ride you share a sled with strangers anyway, so it changes nothing for solo travellers.

Travelling alone? On the Tamokdalen day you are paired up for the drive, with a hot meal at camp.
Check dates for the Tamokdalen day tripWhich gives you more time on the sled?
Self-drive, usually: 70 to 80 minutes on the Kvaløya trip and about 1.5 hours at Camp Tamok, against about 45 minutes on the guided ride. On self-drive you drive only half of it.
Real numbers: Arctic Adventure Tours lists a 70 to 80-minute run, and one guest timed about 90. Tromsø Aurora Husky gives 45 to 60 minutes. Villmarkssenter's self-drive is about 45 minutes, or 25 each. The short Breivikeidet ride is 30 minutes in total. A guided rider sits for the whole ride, so 45 guided minutes is more sitting than a passenger gets on most self-drive trips.

Which should you book: self-drive or guided?
Self-drive for most adults; guided for small kids, older travellers and anyone with an injury.
- Book self-drive if you can stand and balance for 15 to 40 minutes, want to drive, and are 7 or older (16 for some kennels).
- Book guided if you are travelling with under-7s, have back, knee or heart trouble, or would rather watch the scenery than the dogs' tails.
- Mixed families: on the Kvaløya self-drive a parent drives and a child of 7 or more rides. Under-7s need the guided ride. Details in dog sledding with kids.
Either way, dress for standing still in a cold wind: what to wear has the list.

Our pick for most adults: drive your own team on Kvaløya, rated 4.9 by more than 4,000 guests.

Can two adults drive the same sled together?
No. One stands on the runners and drives while the other sits in the sled, and you swap partway through.
What happens if I fall off the sled?
Usually a soft landing in snow. Keep hold of the handlebar if you can; the guide stops the line and helps you back on.
Do I need to be fit for self-drive dog sledding?
Basic fitness is enough on most trips: stand, balance on one leg and push the sled up short climbs. Camp Tamok's advanced trip asks for real strength.
Can a child drive a dog sled?
Rarely. On most self-drive trips children ride in the sled while a parent drives. Villmarkssenter and Camp Tamok only let over-16s drive.
