Wandering Owl · Wherever the sky is clear, sometimes Finland
A small group and a guide leave Tromsø after dark and drive to wherever the forecast shows clear sky, sometimes as far as Finland, then set up a campfire and photograph you under the lights. Book it for a separate night from your sled trip: it gives far better odds on the aurora than any husky camp.

This isn't a husky trip. We list it because it solves the problem with sledding and the aurora: a kennel stays in one place, and if that place is cloudy, you see nothing. Wandering Owl's guides read the weather and drive to clear sky. That can be an hour out of Tromsø, or close to the Finnish border, so bring your passport.
Once there, the crew sets up camp, lights a bonfire and serves a warm meal (guests describe soup, bread, cookies and tea). You get a thermal suit, and the guide photographs you under the lights; web-size photos come by email after the tour, with full resolution for sale. Expect a long night of about 8 hours. One group finished at 1:30 a.m.
It's rated 4.8 from more than 2,400 reviews, and many describe long displays. The aurora is never guaranteed, though, and the cold is the main complaint: one guest was "quite miserable" by the end. Pair it with a daytime sled trip such as the Kvaløya self-drive, on different days, rather than trying both on a single evening sled trip.
Outside the hotel at Fredrik Langes gate 2. Give your suit size (XS to XXL) when you book.
The guide picks a spot from the cloud and aurora forecasts and drives there.
Suits on, bonfire lit, warm meal served while you watch the sky.
The guide explains the science and photographs you when the aurora shows.

★★★★★We drove an our our of Tromsø, got our gear an set camp for the night. After about 45 minutes the sky cleared and we had nearly 6 hours straight of northern lights.
★★★★★As Vitek smoothly drove us toward Finland, Fabien kept us engaged by explaining the sights along the way. [...] On the drive back, he asked us to stop twice, and on the final stop, we were finally rewarded with a beautiful KP4 aurora, with dancing white and pink hues.
★★★★★The location they picked was far from any light pollution on a beautiful fjord lake surrounded by mountains. [...] A wonderful piping hot dinner sitting around a campfire surrounded by snow! Then the light show.
★★★★★As the weather in Tromso was bad, she drove near to the Finland border and successfully tracked down the Aurora. She took many good photos for us!

No. Nobody can guarantee the aurora. A chase improves your odds because the guide drives to clear sky, and many reviews describe long displays, but some nights stay cloudy. Our 2026-27 aurora outlook covers the season.
No. There are no huskies on this trip. It's a minibus chase for the aurora with a campfire and photos. We list it as the natural partner to a daytime sled trip.
About 8 hours. Departure is in the evening and some groups get back after 1 a.m., depending on how far the guide has to drive.
The listing marks boots as not included, though several guests mention boots offered by the crew. Wear your warmest winter boots to be safe; the thermal suit is included.
