Advanced dog sledding at Camp Tamok

Advanced Dog Sledding at Camp Tamok

About this experience

Camp Tamok is Destination Tromsø's wilderness camp in the Tamok valley, about 90 minutes by bus from the city. This trip is sold as advanced, and the listing means it: the trail can be narrow with sharp bends, fresh snow and uphill stretches mean getting off and pushing, and you need good balance. Guests describe small groups of about six with two guides, or three sleds behind one guide.

Guests report about 1.5 hours on the sled, swapping driver and passenger halfway. That's double the run on the gentler Tamokdalen day trip in the same valley, for less money. After the ride you visit the husky yard (sometimes with a new litter of puppies), then eat a warm stew with hot drinks in a lavvo, refills included.

The rating is a little lower than the easy trips, 4.7 against 4.9, and the reviews explain why: some people underestimate it. If you're unfit or heavy, a guest wrote, it is hard on you and on the dogs. The limit is 120 kg. If that worries you, the Kvaløya self-drive is long but easier.

  • About 1.5 hours on the sled, guests report
  • Narrow, winding trails with real climbs
  • Small groups with two guides
  • Warm stew and hot drinks in a Sami lavvo
  • Deep inland snow in the Tamok valley

What guests say

★★★★★

The sledding lasted about 1.5 hours, and we switched places halfway through. Stephan was very helpful, making sure everyone felt safe and comfortable [...] The meal and hot drinks after the ride were great, and they offered unlimited refills.

★★★★★

We expected a slow pace (somewhat boring) experience but it was everything but! It was fast, fun (never felt unsafe), and authentic dog sledding experience!

Eleanor · Mar 2026
★★★★★

Unbelievable and thrilling experience, so magical. Our pack of dogs were very strong and fast. [...] It is physically challenging so being unfit and overweight will only make it difficult for you and the dogs.

Shireen · Mar 2026
★★★★★

A basic level of fitness is definitely recommended, as you have to help the dogs a little on the inclines. At the end, we even got to see a brand new litter of puppies.

Tips before you book

  • Train your legs a little before you go. Pushing uphill in a thermal suit is a workout.
  • Wear thin layers under the suit: you'll sweat on the climbs and cool down on the descents.
  • If you get separated from your partner, a guide pairs you up with someone else. Don't worry about it.
  • Bring snacks for the bus; the stew comes after the ride.
  • Keep a spare day in your plans. Dangerous trail conditions can cancel the trip.
