Tromsø dog sledding season 2026-27

The huskies are already training on gravel. Here is when the sleds come out this winter, where the snow lands first, and how far ahead to book.

Dog sledding from Tromsø is a winter-only activity, and the winter starts on the snow's schedule, not the calendar's. On paper the 2026-27 season runs from about November to April. In practice the first weeks are a lottery, the middle is reliable, and the end depends on how fast the spring sun eats the trails.

This post covers what we know as of 7 October 2026: what operators run before the snow, which valley gets it first, and when you should lock in a December or February date.

The quick answer

Expect sledding on snow from roughly mid or late November to early April, with late December to March the safest bet. Before the snow, kennels run wheeled cart tours instead. Inland Tamok usually has snow before the coast. Book Christmas and New Year dates as soon as your flights are fixed, and February four to six weeks ahead.

When does the 2026-27 dog sledding season start and end in Tromsø?

Snow sledding usually starts in mid to late November and runs to early April. The most reliable stretch is late December to March.

Visit Tromsø describes dog sledding as a winter activity, and most operators open bookings for snow trips from November. No kennel can promise a date. A warm, wet November on the coast can push the first real runs into December, which is why the first weeks on the calendar often carry a wheels-if-needed clause.

At the other end, the trails on Kvaløya soften first. By April the days are long, the snow turns heavy in the afternoon, and the season closes from the coast inward.

What is a husky wagon tour, and will my trip run on wheels?

A husky wagon is a wheeled cart pulled by the same dog team. Early in the season, or after a thaw, some trips switch to it if the snow is too thin.

Read the inclusions. Kvaløya Adventure lists a "Wagon tour (alternative if not enough snow for sledding and conditions allow it)" on its small-group sledding trip, and sells a separate wagon tour on Kvaløya, where a musher drives and you sit. Destination Tromsø, which runs the short Breivikeidet ride and the Tamok trips, states that tours run on wheeled wagons when there is not enough snow.

Guests notice. One Viator reviewer from November 2024 wrote: "No snow ... we used buggies with tires." If you only have one shot at this, book from mid December on. If you are in town in October anyway, a cart ride is a decent way to meet the dogs, as long as you know that is what you are paying for.

Which areas near Tromsø get snow first?

The Tamok valley, about 90 minutes inland, is colder and usually holds snow weeks before the coast.

Tromsø sits on an island warmed by the sea. Kvaløya and Breivikeidet are coastal too. One mild spell and their trails turn to slush. Tamokdalen is a different climate: inland, higher, colder, with drier snow that stays. That is why the long trips go there, even with the bus ride.

If you are travelling in late November or early December, pick a Tamok trip such as the Tamokdalen day trip for the best odds of real runners on real snow. Our guide to Kvaløya, Breivikeidet and Tamok compares the drive times.

When should I book dog sledding for December and February?

Christmas and New Year dates: as soon as your flights are booked. February: at least three to four weeks ahead, more for weekends and school holidays.

The week between Christmas and New Year is the tightest of the winter, with full hotels and small sled groups. Mid February to early March brings European school holidays and the best mix of snow and daylight, so the popular departures fill early too. Fullsuitcase suggests booking three to four weeks ahead in peak season; we would double that for 24 December to 2 January.

Free cancellation helps. Every trip on this site cancels for a full refund up to 24 hours before, so booking early costs you nothing if plans shift. Prices are covered in our price guide.

What can you do with huskies in summer and autumn?

Without snow you can hike with huskies, train puppies at the kennel or ride a wheeled cart. None of these is sledding.

Puppy training at Tromsø Villmarkssenter is the pick of the snow-free trips: a 1 to 1.5-hour walk with pups from 4 weeks old, rain gear and boots provided, then lunch by the fire. The listing says summer is "the new puppies first try at teamwork". Expect mud.

If you are visiting in October or November and the snow has not come, this is the honest choice. A cart ride is fun too. Just do not call either one a sled trip when you get home.

Frequently asked questions

Is there dog sledding in Tromsø in October?

Not on snow. In October kennels run wheeled cart tours, husky hikes and puppy training. Snow sledding normally starts in mid to late November.

Is November too early for dog sledding in Tromsø?

It can be. Some years the snow is there by mid November, other years trips run on wheels into December. For a late November trip, the Tamok valley gives you the best odds.

When does the Tromsø dog sledding season end?

Around early April. The coastal trails on Kvaløya soften first; inland Tamok often holds good snow longer.
