Dog sledding with kids

Kids and huskies get on fast. The question is which trip lets them come, and how to keep them warm and happy through a four-hour day in the cold.

Age limits on Tromsø sledding trips run from none at all to 16. The difference is who drives. Where a musher drives, anyone can ride. Where you drive yourself, the kennels set a floor, and some keep the runners for over-16s.

The good news: every age has a trip, and the dog yard is the best part of the day for most kids anyway.

The quick answer

Under 4: book the guided ride at Tromsø Villmarkssenter, where a musher drives and there is no minimum age (children 3 to 12 pay half when booked direct). From 4: the short Breivikeidet ride. From 7: the Kvaløya self-drive and the Tamokdalen day, with the child in the sled and a parent driving. Bring your own car seat for small children on Villmarkssenter's transfers.

What is the minimum age for dog sledding in Tromsø?

No minimum on the guided ride, 4 on the short Breivikeidet ride, 7 on most self-drive trips and 16 to drive at Villmarkssenter and Camp Tamok.

Which dog sledding trip is best for small children?

The guided ride at Tromsø Villmarkssenter: 25 to 35 minutes on the bus, about 45 minutes in a sled driven by a musher, puppies and a hot lunch.

Each sled holds two or three guests plus the musher, so a parent rides with the child. Afterwards there is the dog yard, puppies, and reindeer stew and chocolate cake by the fire. Booked direct, Visit Tromsø lists NOK 3,390 for adults, NOK 1,695 for ages 3 to 12, and free for under-3s.

Joan, in May 2026: "We had plenty of time (extra even) to spend with the dogs. These dogs LOVE to run!" See the guided ride for departures and what to bring.

Can children drive the sled themselves?

Rarely. On most self-drive trips the child sits in the sled and a parent drives, and Villmarkssenter and Camp Tamok let nobody under 16 drive.

Full Suitcase notes that kids ride in the sled with a parent and don't swap. On the short Breivikeidet ride every child from 4 to 11 must be with an adult. If you have a confident teenager, ask Arctic Adventure Tours before the trip whether they can take a turn on the runners.

Plan the pairs: one adult per child per sled. Two parents with two kids means each parent drives one child, and you won't share a sled. A parent and child together also stay well inside the 170 kg per-sled limit on the Kvaløya self-drive. One guest's review there ends: "My son says it was the best day of his life."

Do they have child seats on the transfer bus?

Not reliably. Tromsø Villmarkssenter asks you to bring your own car seat for small children, or to drive yourself at the same price.

Villmarkssenter's listings say it plainly: the provider cannot guarantee child seats, so bring your own baby or car seat, or arrange your own transport. Using your own car is optional and the price stays the same. Tell them each child's age and weight in the booking notes.

Destination Tromsø's trips to Breivikeidet and Tamok go by coach; ask at booking what they have for under-4s. Visit Tromsø asks families with infants on the Tromsø Aurora Husky trip to bring their own transport equipment, and Viator lists that trip as stroller accessible. Car hire companies in Tromsø rent child seats if you are driving.

How do you keep kids warm on a sled?

Wool next to the skin, the kennel's thermal suit over it, a buff over the face and short breaks. The passenger seat is the coldest place on the trip.

  • Base layer: wool or synthetic, top and bottom. No cotton, which stays wet.
  • Mid layer: one fleece. Not three jumpers: a sweaty child gets cold fast.
  • Hands: spare mittens and a pair of hand warmers in your pocket. Small kids lose mittens.
  • Face: a buff or neck gaiter. The team kicks up snow.
  • Before suiting up: a toilet stop. Getting a 5-year-old out of a thermal suit is a project.

In Tromsø the average January low is about -5°C; the Tamok valley is often -10 to -20°C. The full list is in what to wear dog sledding.

Is a four-hour sledding trip too long for young kids?

Most kids manage the 4 to 4.5-hour trips from Kvaløya and Breivikeidet. Skip the 7-hour Tamok day with under-10s.

The time fills up: the bus, suiting up, a briefing, the ride, the dog yard and food. Kids rarely get bored at a kennel. The Tamokdalen day is different: 95 minutes on the bus each way, and the group splits so half waits at the camp while the other half sleds. That is a long day for a small child, and the valley is colder.

Our pick for families with young children: the guided ride, or else the short Breivikeidet ride. For the rest of the week, see Kvaløya, Breivikeidet or Tamok.

Can kids meet huskies without sledding?

Yes. The northern lights husky visit takes all ages for an evening with 200 dogs, and in the snow-free months puppy training lets kids hike with puppies.

Puppy training at Tromsø Villmarkssenter is a 1 to 1.5-hour hike with puppies aged 4 weeks and up, then lunch with a vegetarian option. Rain clothes and boots are lent, and it gets muddy. Dagmar, in October 2026: "A great experience for young and old alike [...] Plenty of time with the dogs and puppies."

In winter, the northern lights husky visit is an evening with the dogs, dinner and a fire. One family wrote that taking the kids to Norway for the first time, it was "the highlight for them".

What should you tell the operator when you book with kids?

Each child's age and weight, and whether you need a car seat. Villmarkssenter asks for this in the booking notes.

  • Ages and weights: they decide who rides with whom.
  • Car seats: say whether you bring one or drive yourself.
  • Food: vegetarian meals are available at Villmarkssenter on request.
  • Allergies: trips with dogs aren't suitable for anyone with an animal allergy.
